hello all!

i know everyone is wondering how i've been feeling post-firing and post-flu, and i'm happy to say that i'm starting to feel MUCH better! i'm still not 100% but i'm certainly getting there. on a scale of 1-10 i'd say i'm beginning to feel A-OK! also known as...

(yes this picture is about a year old and was taken at flying saucer in downtown raleigh. oh how i miss that place. someone please take me there for wings and beer when i'm home.)

i would love to share a teapot with you of exciting things that have happened, but...well...when you're recovering from the stomach flu, you don't really get out much. the past few days have been spent on the couch watching movies and getting in bed early. although doctors say that you really can't do anything for a virus, i'm happy to report that ample amounts of tea, toast, and blockbuster can get you right back on track. for those wondering whatever happened to that baked potato...

this was a few nights ago when i was still feeling a little uneasy so the baked potato was pretty simple--just a little butter, salt, pepper, and cheese. normally i would have doused it in sour cream and knocked on a neighbor's door for some bacos. the chicken was from gelsons (i can't take credit for that). i just needed a little more substance in my diet than toast, and this chicken was calling my name.
yes, chickens in hollywood speak english.

tonight was really the first night i felt up to eating something a little less plain, so i opted for pasta! nothing too fancy--some angel hair with apple chicken sausage, tomatoes, shallots, and a drop of wine white. i wasn't planning on using goat cheese, but not using goat cheese on pasta this beautiful is against my upbringing.
and at the very last minute, before i even knew what had happened, i had made a balsamic drizzle. one second i was cleaning the pots and pans, and the next thing i knew i had reduced half a cup of balsamic vinegar. it was like i blacked out and mario batali took over my body.

although i had these few pictures to share with you, i feel bad not having any exciting events happen in the past few days for me to blabber on about. so for today's blog, i've decided to skip the blabbering...
and just show you pictures that make me laugh.
you guys think I'M funny...where do you think i get it from?

enjoy!

first and foremost, i'd like to apologize for my brief absence. i woke up yesterday morning feeling like "death warmed up" (as my best friend would say). let's get you caught up, shall we?

yes, it's true...
i haven't done my laundry yet.

oh wait, the getting fired thing? yeah. about that. well, as you all know, i've had a trip home for the holidays planned. turns out that plane tickets home around christmas are EXTREMELY expensive (big surprise). however, the plane tickets the week BEFORE christmas are hundreds of dollars less. that being said, my plans to come home are on the 15th. i gave my boss a full two weeks notice (which is what you'd give if you were actually leaving a job) and at first he seemed okay with it. however, when we finished up work on wednesday night, he explained to me that since his office doesn't close until the 23rd, he couldn't afford to have me gone for that long. he explained to me that because i'm still pretty new at this job, my absence would most likely cause me to forget things i had learned at the office.

it's really not that hard to light incense.

but that's beside the point. i was a little surprised at his decision to let me go that very night and not let me continue to finish out my two weeks here, but that was his decision, not mine. at the end of the day, it comes down to this: was it my dream job? absolutely not. was it supposed to happen for a reason? well duh. nobody likes to be "fired", but i'm the kind of person who believes that everything happens on purpose.

when one door closes, another one opens. not to get too cliche on you, but it's the truth and i believe it with all of my heart. by the time i come home in two weeks, it will have been THREE MONTHS since i'll have been home. coming home and being with my family and best friends is what's right for me, and if losing my job is the consequence of that, well then i guess that's what's right for me as well. letting go of this job will give me the opportunity to come back in january and find something new. something better. there is a reason that it all worked out like this. i guess we'll just have to wait and see what it is.

1. think outside the takeout box

not like i have to worry about this any more, but wednesday afternoon it occured to me that the more meals i can prepare ahead of time, the less money i'll spend on takeout when i come home late from work. i had a package of chicken in my freezer that was begging to be used. i decided to roast it in the oven (pretty simply with olive oil, salt, pepper, paprika, and roasted garlic and herb seasoning) and then use it in a salad when i got home from work.

one empty tummy, one less job, and a few hours later...

after being fired, what else goes better with a delicious salad than an extremely uplifting movie?

well...wine of course. but this movie was exactly what i needed.

i went to bed feeling as if tomorrow i would wake up with a clear head and a new outlook on life.

instead...i woke up with the stomach flu.

i know all of you are cringing at the thought of "the stomach flu", but my worst symptoms have been a fever, chills, and an extremely achy body. not like any of those things are a walk in the park, but i'm just saying, it could be worse.

2. happy hanukkah to ME!

after re-watching eat pray love yesterday afternoon (yes i watched it twice), a knock on my door came from stella who took one look at me and said "whoa. are you sick?" she told me she had something that would make me feel MUCH better and to follow her upstairs. i grabbed my pink blanky and inched up the stairs behind her. while my los angeles social network consists of a number of friends i can count on both hands, stella happens to know TONS of people in all different areas of work. her designer friends have stuffed her closets and storage spaces full of clothes, and stella being the wonderful generous person that she is, decided to share the love. about a week ago, she gave me a pile of clothes. everything from vintage t-shirts to hipster scarves to couture sweaters that probably cost more than my first car. (rip chevy blazer)

as stella piled more clothes on the couch next to me, handed me a protein shake, a mug of her famous homemade green tea, a book, AND a netflix movie to borrow. i looked around and said, "look at everything you've just given me!" and of course, she knelt down....and took a picture.

if you look carefully, you can kind of make out the protein shake in my lap. stella put two bananas in that protein shake. if the first day that i had moved in, she had come downstairs and said, "hey! i'm your neighbor and i just wanted to welcome you to the apartment. here's two bananas!", i would have been in awe that someone gave me something for no reason. well..stella has given me FAR more than two bananas, and i'm so lucky to have such a kind person living right upstairs.

a kickass pair of ripped skinny jeans and and an argyle sweater....yet the first thing i try on are these sweatpants.
this was yesterday. and i'm STILL wearing them. also, if you look carefully in the above picture of the piles of clothes, you can see my fuzzy socks in the mirror. kinda looks like i have grinch feet.
just wanted to share that with you.

3. half baked

my parents said that i need to be eating things right now that are easy to digest. in my twenty five years, i've made hashbrows, french fries, latkes, sweet potato fries, and mashed potatoes...but tonight, for the first time....i baked a potato.
it's still in the oven...wish me luck.

highlight of the day:

tucked inside my mailbox yesterday along with bed bath and beyond coupons and a newsletter from trader joes was a cute little red package from north carolina. inside i found AWESOME candy necklaces, a little decorative hanging that says "peace", and a sweet card from my friend dallas. aside from the fact that mail in general is exciting, knowing that someone took the time to send you a package is one of the best feelings in the world. dallas could have sent me pebbles or paperclips and i still would have been just as delighted. it meant the world to me that she took time aside from her day to send me something and let me know she was thinking about me. also, after being fired and then waking up with the flu, there's really nothing better than getting a surprise package from a friend. i'm so lucky to have such amazing people in my life :)

HAPPY DECEMBER!
and happy first night of hanukkah! bring on the potato latkes.

1. only in hollywood

...is it COMPLETELY normal to see people being followed around by a camera crew.

2. deck the halls...with pad thai leftovers

i think we all know that the best part of thai food, chinese food, spaghetti, or pizza.....is the leftovers.

speaking of things that i've eaten recently...

my first visit to robeks! i've been craving something smoothie-like recently and although hawaii is the best place to find an authentic acai bowl, i did some research and found that robeks juice apparently makes a pretty decent version. i had to find out for myself.

if you don't know what acai is, here's a quick lesson: a small, dark purple berry that grows in brazil. it's known as a "superfood" because it's full of anti-oxidants, amino acids, and all kinds of other crap that's good for you. in a standard acai bowl,  this berry is made into a frozen puree (often by being mixed with other fruits or frozen yogurt) and then topped with granola and sliced bananas. it's hard to describe the flavor, it's almost like a mixture between a blueberry and a pomegranate (this description has been brought to you by sara mclamb). once blended with other fruits, you have a creamy, fruity, frozen mixture.

the review:
as for robeks acai bowl, i'd give it a B based simply on the fact that they used rice krispies in their granola and that is AWESOME. the acai itself was a little chalky and not as sweet as i would have liked. for those of you on the east coast, if you want a REALLY good acai bowl, find your nearest smoothie king. and if you're in hawaii, you can basically find a life-changing acai bowl at any small side-of-the-road fruit stand.

i believe that mexican takeout could solve all of the world's problems.

FINALLY!

3. speaking of things that go with popcorn...

SO excited to see this.
speaking of movies...

julie and julia was one of the awesome reduced price movies i picked up at target while accidentally walking through their doors during the big "2 day sale". best mistake i ever made. the blind side for $3.99...really? last night i brought home my mexican takeout and snuggled up on the couch with my enchiladas and my holiday candles to this movie. julie and julia is special to me for a lot of reasons. one, not only did i read the book way before it was made into a movie, but as i read it, i followed along in my dad's copy of mastering the art of french cooking. i love cooking so it was fun to parallel the two and actually see the recipes right in front of me. although the book is always better than the movie, this movie holds a very special place in my heart. in august of 2009, my parents, my sister, and i went to new jersey to visit my dad's side of the family. a day or two before we left, we all went to see this movie in the theatre. it's always special to go to an actual movie theatre with your family if it's something you rarely get to do. not only did i get to be with my sister who lives far from home, but my grandparents were the ones who treated us all to the movie. i can't even remember the last time i had been in a movie theatre with them. a few days after we got home from new jersey, my grandfather passed away. we were so incredibly blessed to have been with him at exactly the right moment in time, and we made so many special memories on that trip--one of them being this movie.

i would have loved julie and julia regardless, but hearing meryl streep shout bon appetit! means much more to me for this very special reason.

highlight of the day:

EXACTLY two weeks from today, i'll be on a plane coming home <3
and i'm counting down every minute.
